About the Retreat

An Ancient Tradition, Newly Honored

Meditative and contemplative retreats are an ancient tradition across the world and amongst nearly all cultures. Through time and space, these retreats have taken many forms, shaped by different belief systems and practices. Yet the core purpose remains the same: stepping away from daily life to reconnect with what matters most.

To our knowledge, this retreat is the first time a group of people living with Diabetes, specifically T1D, will come together to engage in this timeless tradition exclusively with one another. This makes it a rare and meaningful opportunity. The daily realities of T1D often create barriers, burdens, and a sense of otherness in retreat spaces. Here, you’ll be among those who intuitively understand the highs and lows of blood sugars and the emotional ups and downs that come with slowing down and tuning in.

A Space Tailored for People with T1D

Meditation remains at the heart of this retreat experience—yet the structure is thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs of those living with T1D. We understand the additional burdens, barriers, and planning that often accompany diabetes, which is why the environment is crafted to be fully supportive. Here, there’s no need to explain or justify your experience; the community intuitively understands and is present to support, simply by being together.

For three days, we’ll spend most of our time in silence—balancing periods of guided seated meditation, moving meditations, gentle yoga, and moments of reflection. Early in the retreat, facilitators will offer more structured guidance, which will gradually ease as you learn to trust your own inner compass.

There will also be space for personal check-ins and necessary conversations around health and wellbeing, always respecting the rhythm and flow of the retreat environment.

Who This Retreat Is For

This retreat is open to anyone living with Type 1 Diabetes, regardless of meditation experience. Whether you’re curious and just beginning your mindfulness journey, or have years of practice and retreat experience, you are welcome.

Each participant will take away something different based on what they bring. But for everyone, this retreat offers a powerful opportunity: a chance to step out of habitual patterns, experience deep connection, and reframe how you relate to both your diabetes and your life.

While diabetes is the thread that binds us, the retreat ultimately invites us to see beyond our conditions—to explore how we relate to ourselves, to others, and to the world we inhabit.

The Beauty of Ananda Ashram

A Sanctuary for Stillness & Renewal

Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Lower Catskills, just 1 hour north of NYC, Ananda Ashram offers a peaceful, natural refuge. Surrounded by forests, trails, and a serene lake, the Ashram invites you to slow down and reconnect with nature’s rhythms.

Early September brings warm, golden light by day and crisp, clear nights—an ideal time for reflection and inner renewal.

  • The Ashram features cozy, clean accommodations, nourishing vegetarian meals, and beautiful spaces for meditation, yoga, and relaxation. Whether walking the trails, pausing by the lake, or resting in meditation, the environment supports your practice every step of the way.

  • For three days, you'll experience how nature, mindfulness, and community come together to help you listen more deeply—to your body, your breath, and what truly matters.
